If I Were a Navajo

    If I were a Navajo during the time of the Spanish coming to the New World, I would still be a girl.  I would live out west where the sky is very blue, the weather is often warm, and the climate is dry.  I would not go to school in a building and learn how to read and write.  I would go to a school in my own home and my mother and my aunts would be my teachers.

    I would learn how to plant the corn and the beans and the squash.  I would learn how to take care of the plants as they grew and when to pick them.  I would learn how to make good food from the plants that I grew and the food that the men of the village brought to us.
